Community Helpers

This week we learned about community helpers.  We had some guest speakers come in and speak to us about their occupations.

On Monday, Ayla's dad spoke to us about his job as a Marine Biologist.  We learned about algae and seaweed.  We even got to take a close look at some algae through a microscope!

On Tuesday, a nurse spoke with us about her job.  She explained some of the responsibilities that nurses have and told us what you have to do in order to become a nurse.  The students had some great questions for her.  One student even asked her about a boo boo he had on his arm!  Too cute!

On Wednesday, a banker from First Federal came in to speak with us about her job as a bank teller.  She was kind enough to bring in a quarter saver for every student.  She also spoke about wants versus needs and why it is important to save.

On Thursday, Ayla's mom came in and spoke to us about her job as a biologist.  We learned about beach re-nourishment and watershed.  She also brought in some really neat things like maps, rocks, and binoculars!

On Friday we presented our community helper projects.  The turned out great!
We had a nurse, babysitter, a vet...

... a Coast Guard, lifeguard, karate teacher, police officer...

...a police officer with his police dog, and a firefighter.

Friday afternoon, Josie's dad came in and spoke to us about his job as a lawyer.  We learned a lot about our justice system and got to look at some neat pictures of courtrooms.

To end our week, we did a writing about what we want to be when we grow up.  Here is a few examples.  I am having them laminated and made into a book so that we can take turns taking it home to share with our families.

We had a fun filled week learning about community helpers!  Next week we will be learning about eggs and oviparous animals!
