Future Meteorologists?!

This week our learning was focused around weather.  We learned about meteorologists and what they do.  We found out that meteorologists don't just report the weather on television, but are scientists that study weather.
All this week, we worked on a cooperative group project.  This was our first cooperative group project and they did so well!  Their job was to write and film a weather forecast.  We split up into five groups.  There were four different jobs: director, meteorologist, writer/researcher, and artist.  The kids worked together to decide their jobs.  We talked about the different ways they could solve the problem of more than one person wanting a certain job.  (We had no fights!  I was so proud!!)  Next, they chose their location.  They got to choose from Washington, D.C, China, Antarctica, Australia, and Africa.

Once they were settled in with their jobs and locations, they began their research.  They used weather.com on the iPads to find out the forecast for their location.  The writer took notes.

Next, they began to work on their background for their newscast.  Some chose to draw a map of their location and some chose to draw a scene.

While the artist and director were working on the background, the writer and meteorologist worked on the weather report.  They practiced these over and over again!

Here are our finished projects!  Enjoy!

A Celebration of Dr. Seuss

We had such a seuss-tacular week learning about Dr. Seuss!  We started off our week with crazy hat day in honor of "The Cat in the Hat".  One of my favorites!  Tuesday was "Wocket in my Pocket" day.  On Wednesday, we dressed wacky tacky.  Thursday was pajama day in honor of "I Am Not Getting Out of Bed Today".  And Friday was "Green Eggs and Ham" day.  We had a blast!

During math, we did some Dr. Seuss themed math stations.

On Tuesday, everyone brought something in their pocket.  We shared our items and then did a writing activity with them.

We made green eggs and ham and watched the video.

Most of us liked green eggs and ham!  :)

We went to the library and buddied up with a fifth grade class for Dr. Seuss stations.  It was so much fun that we did it again the next week!

On Friday, we took surveyed ten of our friends to find out what their favorite Dr. Seuss book was.

We had such a blast reading Dr. Seuss' silly books!  It was so neat to see them realize that they are able to read books like "Green Eggs and Ham" and "The Cat in the Hat"! We have come a long way since July!  I am so proud of them all!

Our Timelines!

The week of President's Day, we studied Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.  We read a few biographies about them and talked about timelines.  They did such a great job sharing their timelines with each other!  It was so much fun seeing everyone's baby pictures and how much they have grown.
Take a look at our wall of timelines below!
